Tutoring jobs

Teach one student at a time. In Coral Gables or online.

U Tutors Academy works with university students, graduates and teachers who tutor one-on-one at our center in the Plumer Building on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus, or online. You work as an independent contractor and set your own availability.

The work

What our tutors do

Every session is one instructor and one student. We match you with students who need the subjects and levels you teach, from third grade through college courses and test prep.

Teach one-on-one

Plan and run sessions for the students you accept: school subjects from grade 3 up, college coursework, and prep for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT and TOEFL.

Teach so it lasts

Our method is spaced review: students come back to material at growing intervals so they keep it after the test. You build that review into each student’s sessions.

Log every session

After each session you record it in TutorCruncher with its length and brief lesson notes. Those records are how families see progress and how you are paid.

Coach, never do the work

You explain, practice and coach. You never complete a student’s assignment, write an essay for submission or help during an exam.

Use our channels

Sessions are scheduled through TutorCruncher, and you talk with families through TutorCruncher and the center, not personal phone numbers or social media.

Keep students safe

You follow the center’s rules for working with minors and report any suspected abuse, as Florida law requires of everyone.

How the center works

At the center, or online

In person

Sessions take place in private study cubicles at 5915 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Suite 18, in the Plumer Building on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus.

The center takes no more than ten students at a time, and tablets in the cubicles hold each session’s notes.

Security cameras in the common areas and cubicles record video only, never sound.

Some families opt in to audio recording so a parent can listen to a session later. We tell you which ones, and you begin those sessions by saying they are being recorded.

Accepting the Tutor Terms is your consent to those recordings, and you can withdraw it in writing.

Online

Online sessions are arranged when a family cannot come to the center. They are scheduled, logged and paid in TutorCruncher exactly like sessions at the center.

The same rules apply online: one student, our channels only, and no recording of your own. A session is recorded only when the family has opted in and we tell you so.

Working with TutorCruncher

Scheduling, notes and pay in one place

TutorCruncher is the platform we use to schedule sessions, keep lesson notes and pay tutors. Here is how it works once we agree to work together.

1

Create your account

Sign up on TutorCruncher, add your subjects and qualifications, and accept our Tutor Terms with your typed full name.

2

Accept assignments

Each assignment comes with a rate agreed before you accept. You can decline any assignment or propose a different rate.

3

Teach and log

Sessions are scheduled in TutorCruncher. After each one, mark it complete and add brief lesson notes.

4

Get paid

When we approve a completed session, TutorCruncher pays your share to your bank account on its payout schedule.

A payout follows the family’s payment for that session. TutorCruncher deducts its own processing fee, shown in its payment terms. You never take payment directly from a family.

Pay

From $35 per hour of tutoring

Rates start at $35 per hour of tutoring and vary widely. What you earn depends on:

  • your level of education and experience;
  • the subject, and the student’s level in it;
  • how often the lessons run;
  • and many other things, such as test prep deadlines.

You are paid per completed session. Travel and preparation time are not paid.

Independent contractor

You work for yourself, and file taxes that way

Tutors work with U Tutors Academy as independent contractors, often called 1099 contractors, not as employees.

You decide how to teach, choose which assignments to accept, set your own availability with no minimum hours, and may tutor elsewhere, except for the families you meet through us, during your work with us and for 12 months after.

U Tutors does not withhold income or payroll taxes from what you are paid, and there are no wages, overtime, benefits, workers’ compensation or unemployment insurance.

You report all your tutoring income, whether or not you receive a tax form for it, and pay your own taxes, including self-employment tax. You may need to make quarterly estimated tax payments. Where the IRS requires it, U Tutors or TutorCruncher sends you a Form 1099-NEC.

We cannot give tax advice. The IRS explains independent contractor status and self-employment tax, and a tax professional can tell you what applies to you.

Before your first session

What we ask of every tutor

  • You are 18 or older and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • You know the subjects you teach well and describe your qualifications accurately. A university student is “a junior majoring in mathematics”, not a professor.
  • You complete an online background check through our screening vendor, on its own disclosure and authorization form under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
  • To teach a student whose sessions are paid with a Florida scholarship, such as Step Up For Students, you hold a qualifying credential, such as a Florida educator’s certificate or a bachelor’s or graduate degree in the subject.

Questions tutors ask

Can I tutor online only?

Yes. Choose Online on the application. Sessions at the center are the core of what we do, and online sessions are arranged when a family cannot come in.

Am I an employee?

No. Tutors work with U Tutors Academy as independent contractors. U Tutors does not withhold income or payroll taxes from what you are paid; you report all your tutoring income and pay your own taxes.

How much does tutoring pay?

Rates start at $35 per hour of tutoring. Your rate depends on your education, the subject, the student's level, how often the lessons run and other factors, and it is agreed for each assignment before you accept it.

When am I paid?

Per completed session. When you mark a session complete in TutorCruncher and we approve it, TutorCruncher pays your share to the bank account you register, on its payout schedule, once the family's payment for that session has come in.

Do I need a Florida teaching certificate?

Not to tutor with us. Sessions paid for with a Florida scholarship, such as Step Up For Students, may only be taught by an instructor with a qualifying credential, such as a Florida educator's certificate or a bachelor's or graduate degree in the subject.
